On the 4th January 2006 an invite was sent out to an internet list called “Friends of Lauryn Louise” to create a team for the 2006 Relay for Life to be held at Perry Lakes Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. The Relay would be run over a 24 hour period starting at 3.00pm on Saturday 25th March 2006. This event is a fund raising event for the Cancer Council WA. A team was quickly put together and met a number of times to plan their approach to their fund raising activities. The team was made up of 14 Senior members and 11 Junior members which included Lauryn Louise. “Friends of Lauryn Louise” raised a fraction over $10,000 over the 10 weeks leading up to their first Relay.
The team participated in the 2007 Relay, this time without the physical presence of Lauryn. Lauryn was with us all but this time in spirit only. The team was able to raise a fraction under $12,000 for the 2007 Relay for Life.
During the 2008 & 2009 Relay for Life in Perth, Freinds of Lauryn Louise raised $17.500 & $11.500 respectively. We were surprised to learn that we had raised the third highest amount of funds of all the community based teams at each of these two Perth Relays. We had raised the fifth highest amount when all the different team categories were put together. There were in excess of 170 teams raising funds. At the 2010 Perth Relay for Life, Friends of Lauryn Louise raised $5.600 and in the 2011 Relay we had our best fund raising year yet with $19,250 raised. 2012 proved to be another successful year where we were able to break the $10,000 fund raising target with the total of $10,114 being raised for the year.
The Western Australian team will participate in their eigth Perth Relay due in May 2013. We have set our fund raising goal at $25.000 for the 2013 Relay for Life. We are also looking for companies / organisations that can offer fund raising activities to support us in our endeavours.
Each year, the “Friends of Lauryn Louise” walk representing children fighting cancer. The Western Australian team walks specifically for the children of ward 3B (children’s oncology ward) at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children. Each year we hope to join with other teams representing children to pass on the message that children suffer from this terrible disease as well. Each member of our team wears a photo button bearing the image of one of the children of the ward. We look forward to the support of the community in all our fund raising endeavours.
